'Dogs defeat Golden Eagles 13-3 in spring opener

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State equestrian team picked up its first win of the season with a 13-3 win against the University of Minnesota Crookston on Friday afternoon at the Student Horse Center. The Bulldogs used sweeps in the flat and horsemanship to secure the victory.

Junior Sara Tuck won both the flat and fences Most Outstanding Performer honors while senior Alex Krebs earned the horsemanship honor. Both Bulldogs earned their first MOP honors of the season.

How it happened

The Bulldogs opened the meet with a 4-0 sweep in the horsemanship. The first point came by a 70.5-59 win from Kendra Lee. Krebs rode for a season-high 76.5 to her opponent's 64 in her MOP ride. Hannah Buijs and Emily Maul completed the sweep in the horsemanship with points in their rides.

Fresno State outscored Minnesota Crookston 3-1 in the fences. Tuck opened the event with an 85-78 score in her MOP ride. Taylor Holstead scored a 77 in her win and Ana Bertozzi scored a 69 for the Bulldog point. Fresno State took a 7-1 lead into the break.

In the second half, Fresno State kept the jumping seat momentum going with a 4-0 sweep in the flat. Jillian Spencer won the first point with a 71-58 score. Tuck won her second MOP of the day with a 88-69 ride over her opponent. Elle Martin matched Tuck's score with an 88 of her own for a new career-high. Bertozzi rounded out the event with an 86.

Fresno State and Minnesota Crookston tied in the reining, 2-2. The Bulldog points were won by Brogan Hill with a 75 and Julianne Kelley with a 76.5. Both riders secured new career-highs on Friday. Hannah Hieber also rode for a career-high 77.5, but was edged by her opponent who scored a 78.

Fresno State had five individuals ride for career-highs on Friday - Hannah Hieber, Brogan Hill, Julianne Kelley, Sara Tuck (fences) and Elle Martin.

Tuck earned her first career fences MOP.

Alex Krebs earned her first career horsemanship MOP.

Fresno State had its first sweep in any event since sweeping UC Davis 5-0 in the reining on Feb. 26, 2022.

The Bulldogs had their first sweep in the flat since defeating Lynchburg 4-0 on Mar. 7, 2020.

Fresno State had its first sweep in the horsemanship since defeating UC Davis 5-0 on Feb. 8, 2020.
