FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State baseball team completed its second Mountain West series sweep with an 11-1 win over Washington State.
Fresno State earned its 22nd win of the season in only seven innings due to the conference's 10-run mercy rule. Fresno State remains in first place in the conference standings, three games ahead of second-place Nevada, with a 15-6 record (22-21 overall).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Cougars took their first lead of the series in the second inning with an RBI single.
The lead was quickly snapped by Eddie Saldivar, who hit a bases-clearing double that scored Sky Collins and Owen Faust, who had both singled earlier in the inning.
Cam Schneider and Collins led off the bottom of the fifth inning with singles, each through the left side. The Cougars intentionally walked Eddie Saldivar to load the bases, and Murf Gray sent Schneider home with a sacrifice fly. Justin Stransky also earned his first RBI of the night with an RBI single that scored Collins.
Fresno State had an electric sixth inning that began with a Sotomayor single. Cayden Munster crushed a home run to left field, making it a 6-1 game. The Bulldogs loaded the bases, and Saldivar was hit by a pitch to add another run on the board for Fresno State. Murf Gray took the bases-loaded opportunity and hit a grand slam into the Bulldog bullpen to complete a seven-run inning.
The Bulldogs concluded the game after the seventh inning due to the conference's 10-run mercy rule.
