MOUNTAIN WEST CHAMPIONSHIPS RETURN TO THE CENTRAL VALLEY

For the seventh straight season, and eighth time in the last nine years, Fresno State will host the Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships at Veteran's Memorial Stadium.

SCORING CONTENTION

The 'Dogs head into the meet with 17 athletes sitting in scoring positions (Top 8) in at least one event at the Mountain West Championships, excluding relays. Of the 17 athletes, 11 are on the women's side and 6 are on the men's.

There are currently 18 scoring opportunities (including relays) for the women, putting them at a projected total of 95 points. This would be a 4th place finish, but only trails Colorado State's 3rd place (98 pts.) projected finish by 3 points and San Diego State's 2nd place (110 pts.) projected finish by 15 points.

A 95 point total for the 'Dogs would be the second most ever points scored only behind last year's point total of 139.

Senior Cierra Jackson will be one to watch as she is currently ranked in the top 3 in three different events: discus (1st), shot put (2nd), hammer throw (2nd). She has an individual projected point total of 26 points.

Other women to keep your eyes on include Jewel Ash, currently ranked #1 in the 400H, and Liz Tarczy, currently ranked #1 in the high jump.

On the men's side, 6 men are set to score, with 8 different scoring opportunities. The men's 4x400 is currently ranked #3 in the conference. This would be the first podium finish in this event since 2013 for the men.

EYES ON NCAA WEST REGIONALS

This week is an ample opportunity for the 'Dogs to show how they stack up against the rest of the conference, but also an excellent chance to earn qualifying marks for NCAA West Regionals in a couple weeks. Fresno State is currently ranked #8 in the West Region placing the 'Dogs above all other west region Mountain West schools. There are currently five qualifiers with a goal of adding a few more 'Dogs this weekend.

Current NCAA West Regional Qualifiers:

Cierra Jackson - discus, hammer throw

Emma Harper - hammer throw

Harriette Mortlock - javelin

Liz Tarczy - high jump

Jewel Ash - 400H

The multis athletes, including Colleen Uzoekwe, Ella Spaulding, Madison Hutton, and Garrett Ostrinski, will kick off the meet Thursday morning starting at 9:30am.
